The Power of Clay: A Scientific Look at its Skincare Properties

Clay is an earthy material that has a great concentration of minerals from Mother Earth. It has been used for hundreds of years by ancient Egyptian women to achieve smooth skin tones and glowing complexions in order to look younger.

At SLOW RITUALS, clay is also commonly found in our formulations, such as in our Powder Facial Masks and Body Cleansing Grains. We love their ability to reduce excess sebum, removing impurities, toxins, and dead skin cells from the skin naturally.

The science behind clay is also a fascinating one. When mixed with water, clay undergoes a process called hydration where the clay absorbs the water and forms a paste. During this process, the minerals in the clay become activated. The activation occurs as the water is absorbed into the clay and releases positively-charged minerals. When the hydrated clay mixture is applied on the skin, these minerals then go through an exchange process with the positively-charged impurities on the skin. Simply put, the exchange process allows the impurities to be absorbed by the clay and removed as the clay is washed off from the skin, while leaving the good, natural minerals on the skin.

Incorporating clay into your skincare ritual can provide a range of benefits, from improving skin texture and reducing inflammation to promoting a healthy glow. So why not harness the power of clay and give your skin the ultimate detox it deserves?
